Alfons Bytautas has contributed greatly to the research pioneered at Edinburgh Printmakers in the use of alternative printmaking techniques; particularly in developing acrylic resist etching and photopolymer techniques. He has been instrumental in promoting these revolutionary methods through his teaching, both in the UK and abroad.
In 1998 Alfons was an invited artist at the Iwate Arts Festival, part of the Japan/UK Festival, where he demonstrated these innovative etching techniques to an audience of enthusiastic Japanese students and artists.
Alfons has led workshops at the Amsterdam Graphic Atelier and the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium where he was invited as guest speaker at a symposium on ‘Printmaking and Ecology’. He has also been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Northumbria since 2001. More recently in 2004, he was Guest Course Tutor at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Seriado in Alcala La Real, Granada, Spain.
This year he will present workshops at Fermynwoods (who hold the archives of the influential printmaker, Birgit Skiold) and at Rugby School. Although he is an accomplished artist in his own right (both as a painter and a printmaker), he has collaborated as a master-printer with many artists both from Scotland and abroad, including Alan Davie, Callum Innes, John Bellany and Barbara Rae. An exhibition held at Edinburgh Printmakers in 2004, documenting his career as master printer, featured many works from his private collection.
